Basic License Course

In order to paraglide legally without the supervision of an instructor it is necessary to obtain a S.A.H.P.A. Basic license.  The Basic License entitles you to fly at any Basic graded site at your own discretion.

The South African Basic License is equivalent to an IPPI 4 rating.

NB. S.A.H.P.A. is the only controlling body empowered by the Civil Aviation Authority to issue hang gliding & paragliding licenses in South Africa.

The minimum requirements for a Basic license are:

  1. Valid student license;
  2. minimum of 35 logged flights (minimum 60 seconds duration each) under instructor supervision;
  3. minimum of 4 hours flight time;
  4. 1 soaring flight must have been longer than 20 minutes;
  5. 20 flights must be from over 100 meters height difference;
  6. 2 flights in light  thermic conditions of at least 10 minutes duration each;
  7. must fly from at least two differentmountain sites;
  8. pass the practical flight test curriculum;
  9. obtain more than 85 % in the written open book exam;
  10. the license is also awarded at the discretion of the instructor.

As this course is a  follow-on from the introduction course, more time is spent on improving the starting & flying technique.  In addition to the practical curriculum a series of lectures covering the topics of aerodynamics; meteorology; air law; safety procedures; flying techniques and skills are presented.

CLOUDBASE PARAGLIDING will provide all aviation equipment, including two-way communication.  Video footage where possible will also be used in order to review your performance.

 

 

The COURSE FEE of R13,900 includes:

  1. student license valid for 6 months (R400);
  2. logbook;
  3. SAHPA manual
  4. comprehensive course notes;
  5. exam fees;
  6. equipment;
  7. instruction;
  8. transport;

Please note our course fee is all inclusive, there are no hidden costs, and school equipment is provided up to completion of the course.

SAHPA License fee of R1190 to be paid to SAHPA on completion of course.

We recommend that you allocate a minimum of 12 days full time to complete the course.   We are available 7 days a week and therefore can accommodate your schedule.

If you have committed yourself to paragliding then your own equipment is essential, and we can help to obtain the canopy to suit your requirements. (Own equipment not required for the license course).
If you complete your basic license with us and then purchase all equipment from us we will refund you a minimum of a R1000 against that purchase.

As paragliding is a weather dependent sport, daily flying will be at a site suitable for the prevailing conditions to ensure our high safety standard is maintained.

If due to unforeseen circumstances we cannot fly on a given day, Cloudbase Paragliding undertakes to provide training on the next suitable day.  If the student voluntarily withdraws from the course, a refund may not be entertained.  Validity of course membership is one year from date of entering the school.
